1981 Checkmate 305/898 - R outdrive, I just replaced the lower shift cable then took the boat to my mech for a adjustment check. Tested boat in water shifted great all day. My question would be it has a mechenisem on the shift plate. It is under the povit point of the arm that holds the cable ends. It has two hoses that come from the trim pump and has trim fluid in it. My boat mech said he has not seen one of those in a long time. And could realy not explain to me what it was for. He said it was some kind of Reverse prop lock. I have tried to some resurch but have had no luck. If anyone knows how this works or any info that would help me understand. P.S. no great hurry on a reply. Thanks

It's a reverse lock valve alright, but not a reverse prop lock. Has nothing to do with the prop.

In a nutshell, it keeps the outdrive from lifting up when put in reverse.
It does this by closing off the return lines to the trim cylinders so they won't let the drive lift up.
