Maybe this has been debated/answered - but.

I bought a Chris Craft 284 with twing 305 chevy engines. I was told one should be reverse rotation. I dont believe either is - whats the need for that - and what do I need to correct this if it's wrong?

If there's a better place for this discussion please post link.

Yes, like many people - always wanted a good size boat - bought one because I liked it and the price was right - $12 thousand later - I need help?

Thanks
Rick

yours may be reverse rotation. one engine spins clockwise, one spins counter clockwise. it was done before the marine transmissions were made better. the props turn in opposite direction on twins to cancel out the side thrust

PM a mod to move this to the OMC section

No need to PM - We're on it! LOL

Counter rotation drives do improve boat handling as Scott said. You can look at the props, the twist is in opposite directions for counter rotators.

1987 means you have OMC Cobras. I don't believe they were available in reverse rotation in 1987. Later years had them so if your drives are actually 1988, they might be.

Cobras supposedly did the reverse in the gearcase and not the engine.

The early Cobras were all the same rotation.
There is no easy or cheap fix.
The opposite rotation helped the boat track straighter.
Both props turning the same direction tends to make the boat turn one direction which is countered by the trim tab on the underside of the cavitation plate.
But they still pull easier one way that the other.
