Re: reverse woes

I am having a hard time seeing the part number but my Seloc manual calls it a shift lever but doesn't give a part number.
You might have to call a local dealer to make sure you get the correct part.

Re: reverse woes

Duane,
Also be aware that that engine may have a reverse lock mechanism, make sure the motor is all the way down when you try to shift it into rev and the the lock is engaged, there is also a shift cam on the lower unit that may be worn and keeping you from fully shifting into gear, if you or someone else has forced it into rev, you may have a bent shift shaft.

Hope this helps,
Rickie

Re: reverse woes

ordered the part today and it is supposed to be here on Monday so with anyluck we will put this problem to rest. Will let you all know how it works out.
thanks again
Rickie thanks fo rth eheads will keep an eye on that as soon as I get the part installed. Crossing fingers to hope that all that was wrong was the shift lever control housing.

Re: reverse woes

So I go and install the new part and the same thing is happening the cable just doesn't want to push out to go into reverse. There is about an inch or two of cable that doesn't want to push back fully. I am an inch or two at the motor from being in reverse so if the cable went all the way then it should push into rverse why doesn't cable want to go ?
thanks

Re: reverse woes

I'm having issues very similar to this with my dad's pontoon. I'm going to head up there this weekend to get a better diagnosis of what the problem might be. I"ll keep you posted.

He has a Mercury 25XD serial no. 6500614.

Re: reverse woes

Duane, did you get reverse fixed? Just went thru same thing today, but we were unable to lengthen the cable to push it all the way into reverse. Not sure what year the motor is, I'm guessing late 90's or early 2000.

I should have taken pics ... boat is up at lake 1.5 hrs away ... no phone, no marina. will be back next weekend and need to take all info and tools up to try to fix.

Re: reverse woes

Hey Lisa
Yes I noticed the throttle cable was longer then the shifter cable so just switched them with each other, then let the shifter cable all the way out and that seemed to fix it, it has been going great ever since. Easiest way also to make sure it is your cable disconect the cable and manually see if you can put the motor in reverse. If you can do this then probably is the cable. Hope this helps
