reviving a 1976 mercury 50 hp

I'm looking a getting my first boat, I found a 1976 lund with a 50 hp merc. The owner says it ran great. He got it fogged and it has been sitting in his garage for 10 years. How much could I being looking at repair cost to get this engine running. would this be a wise investment.

If he wants to sell the unit to to you have him service it and start the engine, don't ever buy a outboard or for that matter anything with out hearing it run, we see the junk pawned off on people everday--Bob

I just took ownership of a 1980 Merc. 50 that has been sitting sonce 1999. It took fresh gas, new lines, on-motor carb cleaning (whew!) new impeller and a day's TLC. Runs like a dream now.<br /><br />Good luck!<br />Nikko

AGREE 100% with Laddies<br /><br /><br />New impeller, rebuild carbs, de carb engine, new gas lines, rebuild fuel pump, new fuel filter, maybe new fuel tank if it is full of gunk, batteries (?), misc issues. Buy a manual and a case of beer, send the wife and kids away for the weekend, prepare to spend sometime at your local marine mechanics shop and have fun.<br /><br />Get the book "Boating Magazine's Outboard Engines - maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair". Great resource. Lots of tips, techniques, pictures, etc. If you have a basic understanding of motors, can search info on the web, you probably will be able to troubleshoot and fix your motor, in most instances.

Klost:<br /><br />It took me 4 reads to figure out what the heck you were talking (typing?) about, but I finally clicked.<br /><br />Uhh, yeah. I *wish* is was like that Not that easy though. But it's been on the same boat and owned by the same guy since new and if what I saw when I had it apart was any indication, this guy spent more time maintaining it thatn he did using it.<br /><br />I also should have mentioned that while I'm totally comfortable around the wrenches, hanging out in this place for a few weeks prior to tackling the motor was the best thing I could have done. I knew what steps to take, where the gotcha's were, what to be carefull of and when to use a little muscles..all because of what I read here. Y'all should take a bow <br /><br />Nikko
