since i am in the mood for questions, i changed spark plugs but wanted to see if that cured the rough engine revving before i went to the lake. i put the muffs on and let it rev up to 1500rpm for a second and then back down to idle and then up one more time. is this ok or a no no. i erred on the cautious side but would like an answer for the next time

Re: revving with the muffs on. ok or a no no

i rev on the muffs if i cant take my boat out on a weekend, not for along time just short bursts after it has warmed up, like hitting the gas in your car to clean something out that is making it run ruff, not for more than 2 or 3 seconds. people say that its bad but i have done it ever since i had a boat, and never hurt anything, i dont think the arguement of not enough water suplied by the muffs is all the true, just my 2 cents. someone is sure to pick this post apart though that beleive the oppsite of what i beleive.

maybe a stupid question but does the drive have to be all the way down too?

i usually put it all the way down, i ahve done it both ways but it runs fully down and i figure everything is supposed to run that way to why not take the extra 30 seconds and put it down, give the TNT a work out also. I only start my boat like that and rev it if i cant run it that weekend, i let it run for like 5 or so minutres. (in the down position) I only spurt the engine never hitting over 2500 RPMs

Yes, down is important as the u-joints are spinning. I also rev slightly, but these guys who post that they can hit 4000 RPM on the muffs are . . . well . . . uh . . . need this forum . . . Apparently you can exceed the hose's ability to provide water, and that would be bad.

I usually run the engine up in spurts on the muffs while running there......might call it goosing it just to insure that it takes the throttle.

But you need to understand that revving on muffs is not like punching outta da hole in da watta and just because you get a positive reaction on muffs doesn't mean that your fuel supply system is adequate for the hole shot.

Usually run with the engine or drive down.

Never had a problem.

An engine running on half it's cylinders will rev to red-line in a heartbeat and to many, will sound perfectly normal. But put the boat in the water and it can't get out of its own way. Four strokes will not run-away like is possible with a two stroke.
