Rggg, I usually dislike compatibility questions....But here's another Sorry. '84 115

Been using the BRP, Iboats.net charts...and dont really have an answer to this. I've looked at the charts in the sticky too.

Rebuilding my '84 115hp. I believed spare lower unit I already had would be a match. Its a 1993 25" (same length of both). I test slipped it onto the Exhaust housing on the bench (minus Phead) and everything seems to fit aok. I then slipped just the Crank over the shaft splines--and they fit great too. Everything seems ok test fitting on the work bench.

However, in looking at all the year charts..These years dont look like an "exact" match, but some parts do--like the crankshaft and shift shaft.

Is it just gearing that is different? Am I going to be ok to use the LU '93? I do have a lead on an inexpensive 1988 LU from a 150 25", if someone can tell me if that might be better?

Check to see if the exhaust passages line up. That's probably the difference.

1979-1991 had one design and then 1992-1998 was a different design.

Yes, I just sat the crankcase on top of the housing(its split still), and we slid in the lower, everything including the PHead passages line up, all bolt holes etc.

I found this website that shows all the Lowers by years and type/discription:
Johnson outboard parts layout type O V4-V6 gearcase

Looks like the lower I have is called a type "O" and called a "large gearcase" '79-'06 v4 &v6. I'm going to proceed with it for now as I cannot see any obvious difference.

If anyone knows why I cant/shouldnt please shout me down
