Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

OK........you guys are right. I guess I just wasn't looking forward to the glassing part and started to overthink it a bit. I'll think I'll confine the liner to the deck area.

The stringers I've made are the same size as the fibreglass shells that the rotted stringers came out of. Actually the fibreglass was super thin up the sides of the stringers, almost paper-like..there wasn't much to begin with so the new ones are gonna get a good build-up of glass layers. I've never fibreglassed before but have been doing lots of reading.

I was told I should use polyurethane resin mostly because of the price and cure time adjustability. What do you think I should use for the layers of matt & roving?...Should I use more than 2 layers of each?

Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

I coated all of my stringers in Herculiner. Using a mail in rebate, I was able to buy a gallon for $70. I used two gallons on my project and had plenty left over so I did my gas tank. I was qouted $800 to have a shop spray it on too.
I don't think its heavy, even when I used two coats. If the Army uses this stuff to cover their gas tankers and a bullit will seal itself its good enough for me. It was very easy to do and if you choose to do it yourself you will save a lot of money, plus it was kinda fun too. Here are a few pictures..Zet

Zetman.

It doesn't look like you reglassed your stringers; or am I not seeing it. Is your boat back in the water, and does it seem that the coating is holding up for strength like we're inquiring about?

thanks

Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

I ripped out old wet foam, let everything dry, checked for any rot (the stringers where Mahogany) The original stringers were not covered in glass just tabbed in. Once dry I coated where the gas tank would sit and let it sit for a couple of weeks. I really like how the liner set up. It adheres to the wood and figerglass like glue. After that I went along and did the rest of the stringers with two coats and made sure all wood was covered. I know this is not the traditional way of boat building, but it will outlast me. As a side note I did'nt rush the drying time, did a lot of prep work like sanding the stringers, following the directions on the can. A picture is one thing, seeing it and testing it yourself is another. The main reason for all this is it was cheap and easy, less mess, no fumes. Zet

Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

The difference is you left your old stringers in place along with the tabbing that secured them, so there was no structural change, only a possible increase in strength from the liner product. The only thing holding in Smokin's stringers was going to be the Rhinoliner, no glass.

Covering the wood will help to seal it better, but covering the glass won't do much except add weight and cost, It may make it look better though.

Ayuh,....

I Agree with Ondarvr,.......

I think it's a Bad Idea to substitute Putty,+ Bedliner for what Should be Resin......

And,...... Those Stringers are Way Overbuilt.... No Reason for 2" wide stringers,......
Most hulls are lain up with 3/4" Stringers.....And Fiberglass & Resin of course.....

I think you're Way over impressed with 5200,.....
It might be abit tenacious,....
But,... It's Still just a sealing Putty.......

Hey Bond-o, Do you think the stringers are too heavy for this boat? The size I have built is the same as what came out although the construction method is different. The old stringers consisted of outer layers of 1/4" ply with pieces of 2x6 dropped down in between. The 2x6 pieces were cut into small lengths and put in with the cut face facing up and down. (kinda wierd don't you think?)Mine are laminations which should be much stronger. I don't know how much the old ones weighed since they were all wet sawdust when I was removing them. Also I think they are slightly heavier than the 100 lbs I stated, probably closer to 150 lbs each. Will this have a detrimental effect on the hull? Keep in mind the boat is a 21ft long, deep-v hull, stringers are 184" long.

Sounds like somebody was there Before you.....

Ayuh,.....
I think either Just the 1/2" plywood laminated up, or Just the 1/4" plywood laminated would be Plenty......

3/4" Stringers, properly installed should be More than enough for Any boat......
Will this have a detrimental effect on the hull?
Ayuh,.... I guess you'll have to define "detrimental"......

It's going to be 1 Heavy Barge using full length Trees in there.....
I gotta believe the fuel mileage will suffer,+ it's Get Up + Go will take More HP....

Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

The boat has never had any work done on it. The original owner lives 2 blocks from me and has not done any below deck work. This makes sense cause when I cut out the floor I was cutting out original flooring that was part of the inner liner which is attached to the hull at the rub rail seam.

By detrimental I mean will it cause the hull to crack.

It does seem heavy. Maybe what I should do is run the stringers through my thickness planer and reducer them to 1.5" thick. What do you think?

Re: Rhino Liner - Stringers

As mentioned above, there are many brands and formulation of" Rhino Liner". It is my understanding, the material sprayed hot is much better than the cold sprayed material.

I am a farmer and we coat all our pick-up beds with the newer material. We used Rhino Liner several years ago. All of it is tough but over time it does wear and will break open. We use it hard. It has all kinds of material thrown on it and it does hold up and it is very resistant to corrosives.

It is also my understanding the commercially applied (hot) material is much better than the do-it-yourself.

I like the material but I do not think it is a substitute for fiberglass. It certainly would add protection over glass but as I said before, it will tear.

I am re-doing an old (1979) Tracker for fishing river lakes. I replaced all wood floor and wood decks with 10 ga aluminum. My first thought was to have it sprayed with a coating like mentioned above. I decided to use a urethane paint with non-skid added. The above mentioned coating is heavy. I do believe it has an application in marine but I am not sure where it should and should not be used. As mentioned above, coating gas tanks seems to be a very good idea.

Do not misunderstand me, I do like it and it is tough. I cannot imagine what the bed of my '02 F250 Super Duty would look like without it. I sure would not be white like the rest of the truck.

Have a good week.
