Rhino lining

Has any one used Linex or Rhino lining on the bottom of there boat? I am considering using it untextured on a bass boat. The guys at the shop say they can put it on as smooth as glass. I think it would at least make a good keel protector. But wonder about drag. Any thoughts??

would you have to scuff up the hull to make it stick as with bottom painting?

I would imagine the area would require prep(sanding), but how durable can you get. I think you would be able to beach without worrying abot scrathing or small holes. The gov't even paint this stuff on cinderblock walls for ballistic test.

I'm doing just that on my boat. I'm using Herculine instead of Rhino. The Herculiner is a do-it-yourself product. The guys at Rhino could'nt fit my boat in their bay I would have to travel to the next Rhino dealer to do it. Plus, the price they qouted me was too much. $5-600 to line my stringers and do a strip on the bow. I bought the Herculiner locally and got a mail-in rebate so 1 gallon cost me $70. 1 gallon has done the whole inside of my boat with two coats. Is easy to work with and goes on nicely. I just did the bow yesterday and it came out great. I will be doing my keel soon..You just need to scuff the the surface with 60 grit sandpaper, clean with xylene and paint.

I was looking at the Herculiner myself. My local napa auto parts sells it but it looks pretty rough; is there a different type of the herculiner?

Different type like smooth? No. I think Durabak makes a smooth finish and in many colors but pricey...Zet

just something to think about is that anti fouling paint might not stick to the rhinoliner.

but i dont think thats important for you any way

I'm the type of guy who'll try just about anything, especially if it saves me a few bucks. I used Herculiner (the kit) on my Silverado truck bed, and would not recommend it to anyone. I applied it carefully (over a weekend) and followed directions exactly. It looked great at first, and I was real happy. It started fading into a dull grey over the next few months, and the few loads I hauled, chipped it in a few places.

Touching it up with new Herculiner made the faded stuff look worse. When I went to sell it, it was a talking point from prospective buyers; it actually dropped the value since that stuff can't be removed easily. I wished I hadn't used it at all.

But, best of luck to those who chose to use it anyhow. I've seen other people do their Jeeps and whatnot and be happy with it, for what it's worth.

I know guys that have done it to jons, but won't again. Inside the boat is one thing, but definitely not outside.

probably got chipped, faded, came off, dissolved... a number of things that the boat goes through at 45MPH on the water. adn if you let it sit it cant be good for it. just a few hours probably makes it start to seperate. i could be totally wrong but that is my expeirence with things that dont be long in the water that are used in the water.
