I have noticed that when trolling at idle the voltage drops below 14.2 and when starting the engine needs to rev past 1500 to excite the alternator to charge. The local boat alternator guy says to take the resistor out of the circuit to the alternator so it will charge sooner.
Is this good advice? I don't want to hurt anything, especially electrical!

What you are discribing is a normal condition, although once you excite the alternator field it should continue to charge around 13.5 - 13.8 volts even at idle. What kind of problem are you having?
