Re: Rich jerks.

turn out to be that the video that you guys showed me is very accurate
ya it is. i've had the misery of falling off while loading on the missouri river. the hole at the end of the ramp was shoulder high on me. seems like i was in thigh deep water prior to jumping off the end to get my leaf springs unlocked from the end of the ramp... i was lucky that day. i had three people total that day. absolutely took two men to get it up to where the wheels were back on the ramp. one to drive it out.
i don't power load at all.

Re: Rich jerks.

I'm going to take a guess that this was at least a 20ft fiberglass bass boat since it has a 225hp motor. The trailer has carpeted bunks as with most, there might be some weird ones out there that aren't carpeted. Bass boats have shallow hull so if you back in far enough to where you can float it on all the way the boat won't be centered on the trailer. I idle then put in neutral when the bow reaches the back of the trailer. The momentum pushes the boat onto the trailer but still leaves a short distance between the bow eye and winch roller. I then give it some gas to go the rest of the way. All of you guys with roller bunks saying that it is easy to winch on, wait until you try it on a big fiberglass bass boat.

"The momentum pushes the boat onto the trailer but still leaves a short distance between the bow eye and winch roller." solution, Tall guideons, trailer further back in the water, entend your trailer tongue, if you don't want tow vehicle tires in water.

i have 6 ft between bow stop and coupler, also longer tongue tows better.

That's what I've been trying to tell them. The only boats I've ever tried to load were the old heavy fiberglass boats on old trailers. If you want it to float all the way to the winch you have to be in so deep the boat would not be centered on the trailer. And we have picked up the boat with it all cockeyed and had to put it back in to straighten it. We even have the gaudy tall guide posts and it keeps it ON the trailer, but not necessarily where it needs to be to tow it.

My dads large bass boat though, the one that idles at 8mph, will slide right up at a slower speed if given just a bit of throttle. Not really a full "powerload" but more than idle.

To those who continue to say "well, right trailer length, right water depth, it can be done!" well yea duh! If everything is perfect any boat can be loaded and not power loaded but not every ramp is perfect for every boat setup. Seems like I have said this before.

Oh definitely not. But most people don't take too kindly to being told what to do, especially by a kid. If the OP is 15, then he's quite brave and probably a bit naive as to what can happen when you tell someone something like that. I've seen shouting matches from instances just like this that could have easily turned deadly if either party had had a gun. To say it only happens in Louisiana is a joke.

I still think that the OP had the best of intentions. I wish more people would speak up like he did, I just also pray for their safety when doing so.

It's not just here, but anywhere. You don't know if that guy has a dead body in that boat and you're telling him how to do things. He could have just gotten out of prison for murder. You just don't know. That's why you keep your lid shut and as long as life isn't in danger you do and say nothing. That's what I would do. If it looks like he needs help, offer help, but not opinions.

And JB, a sign isn't a law, its a rule. You cannot be given a ticket for a rule violation. There is a big difference.

A sign isn't a law? does that mean speed limit sign's are just suggestion? as for power loading. I have a 28' sport fisher, a 17' jet boat and a 34' foot houseboat, I have never had to powerload any of them. I don't even pull the winch cable out (jet boat does not have a winch just a catch) usually my boats are not even running I use a line to pull them up. but I don't have a problem backing my tow vehicle in deep enough to get my boats all the way up. And we boat at a lake with huricane force winds. I just deal with it. I have never seen a sign at our lake's that forbid it. I just have never seen a cause to do it. and I have been boating for thirty years. and in the words of Forest Gump...thats all I have to say bout that.

Re: Rich jerks.

moral of the story is that powerloading causes damage to your local boat ramp.
