http://www.richteranchors.com/

I'm thinking about getting one of these. I am wondering if any of you guys have used them, and if you think they are worth the money. I have a 14ft alumacraft, and was thinking of going with the second smallest anchor on list. I currently have a mushroom anchor and a small lead/concrete one that i plan to use in the back of the boat.

In mild conditions that anchor should be fine. In a bad situation that requires your anchor to hold to keep you safe, I wouldn't use it.

From their site: "they out performed any other design at the same weight". Then look to the right and they recommend an 18 pounder for boats up to 20'.

Keep looking. Danforth with chain is still my fav.

Re: richter anchors

Been doing a little searching on anchors still. i personally have never used a chain on any anchor, what does it do exactly, and what are the benefits and drawbacks? Are there situations when a chain would hinder hold?

Re: richter anchors

The chain helps to keep the pull of the rode more horizontal so the flukes of the anchor dig into the bottom. It wouldn't make any difference on a mushroom anchor or block of concrete. The only time a chain would hinder the anchor is if you just drop the anchor and chain overboard without the boat backing down from the anchoring spot. In this case, the chain could pile on top of the anchor and foul it.

Re: richter anchors

I have a small fluke anchor that works great for fair weather boating. It holds my 14.5 foot runabout solidly in place in strong currents and tides. In both sandy and rocky bay bottoms, and it's only about a foot long. I was skeptical when I saw it. I thought it was way too small. But it was rated for boats up to 17' and has been working fine. It is also fairly easy to store because it's basicaly flat. There's about 3' of galvanized chain on it.

I don't know how well it would hold in a storm, but I really don't plan on finding out either.
