Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

Re: Riddle Time

You counted the $2 that the bellhop kept twice. It was part of the $27 the three guests paid.

You didn't count the three dollars they got back in the final tally.

$25 the desk kept + $2 the bellhop kept + the $27 they got back = the original $30.

This one has been around for at least 54 years. I got an A+ for solving it in High School after several classes failed to note the error.

Re: Riddle Time

Room tax . . . Actually there is no extra $1, but that did bug me for a bit. They paid $27, the Bell hop got $2, The hotel got $25.

Edit: Sorry JB ofr the double whammy, but it is appropriate on the 54 year anniversary that $27 x $2 for the Bellhop = $54 . . . (Twilight Zone theme)

HUH? The hotel got 25.00 the bellhop got 2.00 and the 3 friends got 1.00 each =3.00 dollars . 25+2+3=30.00

It may have been around for a while....but you would be amazed at how many people can't figure it out ;-) Just ask your local McDonalds drive through window attendant.

3 friends did not "got $3 each". They paid $27, $2 to the bellhop and $25 to the hotel . . .

I said 1.00 each not 3 and the 27.00 that they think they paid has nothing to do with solving the problem because they actually did not pay 27.00 to the hotel they paid 25.00 and the bellhop kept the other 2.00 dollars.

Roger. Sorry for the misquote. I meant $1 and we are saying the same thing, just you better than me. What I meant is that they outlayed $27 and the hotel got $25, bellhop $2 . . . We're on the same page, mine's just a little crumpled. I still think somebody paid occupancy tax
