right hand versus left hand drive

my house boat project has a penta 270 outdrive.
while testing the motor, the outdrive locked up.
not sure what the problem is yet as i have not taken it apart, I had a second outdrive available to me, which I believed to be an identical 270 outdrive.
upon closer inspection, the secon one drives the opposite of the orriginal.
not sure how this works, not sure I really care..well, maybe I do, but my hitch is that the power prop I want to use is for the left hand(counterclockwise drive outdrive setup.
can I without ill effect, use the power prop on the clockwise rotating outdrive, but in reverse to go forward?
and the opposite to go in reverse?

Re: right hand versus left hand drive

you can change the rotation of the drive by pulling the back cover off of the upper unit (shift cover) and change the shift linkage from the right hole to the left hole or vise versa on the eccentric piston arm. do not spin the linkage or move the arm when doing so. really easy to do. pull 2 cotter pins and move it to the oposite side.

and that would then be the only difference between the two setups.
thank you very much.

I am learning a whole bunch more than I ever imagined with this project.
I really enjoy learning the things that dont cost me a fortune:)

starflight, being stubborn as I am, I put some real voltage to the starter and got her turning over good, well, good enough to get her to start.
I had it in my head that it was stuck rings, figuring it would come out of it.
well, she fired up, and this time I really worked the throttle to keep it running. after about ten seconds, she locked up

I was sitting directly above the engine when it happened, and I could tell it wasnt the engine, but rather, the outdrive.
so I took the outdrive off and sure as heck, i couldn't budge the input shaft.
it's ok, I have another one installed already.

this did allow me to hook water up directly to the intake tube and start the motor.
Boy did she turn over then!
I let her run for a few minutes and the longer I let it run, the smoother it got.
(stuck rings, unsticking).

I hung the other outdrive on it and now I can fire it right up at will, just like you ought to be able to.

I have yet to dive into the other outdrive to see what the problem is. I suspect a bad bearing that was have alot of trouble being persuaded into turning over when the engine wanted to turn over.
when I did get it going, the bearing won the argument.

I will check the compression once again after I bring it up to temperature.
I think it is going to be right around where it should be.

cool deal bro. if your not going to get the head work done, be sure to add a lead additive w/o hardened valve seats. our local Mac tool guy has a real lead additive. i'm not sure how well the lead substitutes work. perhaps someone else can chime in about the substitutes.

I will do that.
thanks for the advice!
stop by, lets take her for a spin!:)

I will probably get the head work done, in fact, I have a whole other motor to rebuild now, so I think I will do that while I'm playing with my new house on the water, so's if'in I ever need it, it'll be there for me.
