ring break in time

Hi - my father and I have recently replaced the rings in my 76 Evinrude 9.9. We ran about two gallons of 25 to 1 gas through the motor. The compression readings are low - around 30 psi in each cylinder. Have we messed up or does it take longer for the rings to set in?

Are you sure? I doubt it would even run with only 30psi compression. That just doesn't sound right.

pull on the recoil really slow, can you feel a decent amount of resitance as the pistons reach top dead center then you have more than 30psi compression.

I will try a different gauge - theres not a whole lot of pressure when you put your thumb over the spark plug hole. On the river the boat ran fine at full throttle but continually stalled when idleing down. Probably due to the oil content - I will pull the carb anyway and give it a cleaning.
