I’m passing this on so others don’t make the same mistake, maybe I was doing something wrong but here’s the story.

While trying to put the pistons back in my Merc V-150 I using one of those collapsible sleeve type ring compressors. After breaking three rings and blowing the top off of one piston  I remembered back 20 years  to when I worked at a boat shop. The lead mechanic always used nothing more than his fingers and a small flat screwdriver to collapse the rings back into the cylinders. :D

That was a $200.00 lesson.

Re: Ring Breaking And Piston Busting

The screwdriver can put scratches on the ring sealing surface, but a wooden tongue depressor or popcycle stick works great.
