I have a 4.5 Mod.J5RCSS that will run if I turn the fly wheel fast with a drill but not with pull rope, If I replaced rings is it as simple as removing the head and replacing rings or should I have a shop do this? I am thinking I will need to remove connecting rod and pull piston up to get to rings?

???---Guessing at what the motor may need gets expensive in a hurry.------What is the history on the motor?------What does a compression test show.-----Do you have proper spark that will jump a gap of 1/4" or more ?----You might be shocked at what ring replacement will cost at a shop as motor needs to be torn down for this.

Thanks:The history this motor ran in fall and in spring, it started ran then did not restart,[I did not fog ] I will do another compression test as it has been a year ago I looked at it,I really don't think this motor is worth the money to have a shop repair rings if it needs torn down.

On a 1980 model the cost of ring replacement could quickly add up to $500 or more.----I doubt that the problem is the rings.-----Only with testing and good trouble shooting will you find the problem with it.

Thanks again, that's the best news I've had all day I'll start again with a compression test and let you know what I find,do you know what is acceptable compression for this motor?
