Re: Rings True!!!

It all takes twice as long, costs twice as much, and comes out looking half as good (as I thought it would).

Mine looks lots better than I thought it would and has never failed to get a complement when I have her out. I could have bought the same boat cheaper but I would not know every inch of it either

I have to add my 2 cents to this discussion and that is I can't understand how some folks can spend the money on this recreation and not work on thier own rigs but they seem to be the ones asking all the (to us simple ?) that we already learned and know from just doing the work ourselfs and that my friends is how we know our own rigs like the backs of our hands and all thier little quirks be they good or bad and that will always ring true to me at least.

Fun thread here :) ..

I would say that sometimes your own resto is the way to go..sometimes you should hire a pro.

It really depends on Motovation..materials .. money and Time. ( Being Single helps a great deal too lol :) ).

Seriously.. One good thing about a for hire is You have warranty on the repair ( if you mess up then order another 5gl of resen and glass ). Or you can have your boat back in the water in 2 weeks rather then 2 months ( boating should be about fun too :) ).

Down side of hire is you have no clue what they did or what they used. Now you forever have some itch in the back of your mind wondering... Hmmm.. Who was that guy ?

Bottom line is sometimes it is better to DIY .. you KNOW whats there and have learned.

Peace out YD.

We do not rebuild boats to save money!

I have rebuilt several boats and soon sold them at a loss to move on to another project.

My late father-in -law was a master wooden boat builder. He gave his boat away. One of his last boats is in the Mystic Sea Port Museum.

IF YOU DON'T DO IT YOU WON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN!

This statement is partially true. While we don't typically save money, building these ourselves does allow us to spend money in little bits versus shelling out a couple grand at once (which many of us definitely don't have) for one already in good shape. I certainly could have gotten a boat like mine in real nice shape for the $6k+ I have in the rebuild, however, I doubt anyone on craigslist was going to be real interested in financing one for me :D (especially at 0%)

If anyone wants to try to resto a boat it should be in 3 mindsets ! ( Im talking stringers, holes, trans and bulks ).

1. SAFETY !! for you and/or your family. There is Alot of Info here .. some just enough to make someone with the wrong resto do the wrong thing and not be safe. ( this is a good point to hire ).

2. COST !! I dont understand .. If you cant afford it..then dont Buy it ! I look at boats as anything else.. an Investment. Why would you spend 3k on a resto that is only worth 1500 bucks ? .. ( reminds me of the housing crash :) ) . If your in love with the boat..and want to spend more on it then what its worth..then why ask the cheapest way to do it LOL..

3. LEARN/EXP !! I agree again that learning how to glass/paint/repair/stringers..etc is a good thing.

But..sometimes a Pro should be doing the work. Not ONLY for your cost.. but for SAFETY number one.

Re: Rings True!!!

I can understand the cheapest way to do something. Why put 1500 dollars into an aspect of a boat when 15 dollars is all it takes. Some people on the board have done made huge money mistakes and maybe that can save a new person the same costly mistakes.
