I just bought a used mid 80's Rinker built 14ft V-hull fiberglass boat, with remote steering. It has no motor, so I am planning on buying one this winter/spring. The previous owner ran a 9.9hp on it. The boats max motor capicity is 55hp (which seems way to big)....what would be a good size motor and or brand for this type of boat?
I like to just cruise around lakes, alittle fishing, and maybe take the kids tubing. I have been looking into 4 strokes any suggestions?

What brand, Mercury. But that is kinda bais. We tell most people, as long as you buy a high end brand (Merc, Evin, Yammi) then look for the best service in your area. That is what it is going to come down to, if you do have a problem. Hopefully you won't. As far as a 2 stroke, I would put a 50 on it. I work for US fish and wildlife, and we have a 14 footer with a 50 hp on it, and it works great. You can put, or really go. If I opted for the 4 stroke, I wouldn't go above 35 probably, due to weight. Good Luck

O, I didn't see that it was fiberglass. I would definately go with a hp closer to you rating. You could ski behind a 14 with a 50 on it. Good Luck

Leakyboats,
I would go for a 40-50 4 stroke, preferably
Honda, Yammy, or Merc, whatever dealer you can find the best service from. Dont go with anything below a 35. It will be too slow and you will not be able to pull a tuber. Remember, you can always throttle back to make a strong engine go slow, but you can't make a weak engine any stronger.

One more benefit of the 40-50's, you'll gain the extra cyliner. Most 40-50 are 3 cylinders which translate into a smoother engine. Oh, and dont forget to get power Trim and Tilt. If you dont get it you will spend the rest of your life wishing you did!

Nav
