I sanded down my little fiberglass boat and was wondering if I need to wash it off with a soapy water and rinse, or a vinger/water wash, or nothing but good ole compressed air before I prime it?

Re: Rinse

Chances are that there is some wax on the surface so a rinse with soapy water won't hack it. Use your favorite solvent to get the wax off then do the soapy water thing.

Re: Rinse

I hate to go against the grain here, but acetone does not remove enough wax to paint over, go to a Sherwim Williams store and get a wax remover or use xylene and then bath it in what you mfg recomends, I just yesterday was given a hard lesson.

Re: Rinse

Tail Gunner glad you mentioned about the acetone not cutting the wax. I forgot about removing the wax! Thanks for the good eye. I have always done a heavy acid wash to clean off the wax then sanded, cleaned with acetone or laquer thinner then primed and been ok but yeah one way or another you gotta get that wax off.

I dunno...he said he sanded it..my take is the wax should be long gone. Maybe we need a little more elaboration on the "sanding"..

Re: Rinse

Murray, I think the wax is gone. Use the acetone prior to primer.

Re: Rinse

Actually that is a resonalbe assumption, go and get some Sherwin William's wax degreaser or xylene, acetone does not remove it all,and sanding it just spreads it around........... believe it.

Re: Rinse

Thanks for all the info I am headed to the store for xylene. Another queston how much do I need for this little boat. Clerk at store said it was around 12 bucks a gallon not a bad price I guess.
