Ordered a pair of gaskets for the riser. The new ones appear to be paper type. Ones currently on riser have a Green Core. Do I need to re-order or can the ones I got be used properly?

Re: Riser Gasket 98 Merc 5.0L

I just bought some gaskets for mine and they too are the "paper" type with some sort of gray/silver coating on them not unlike an exhaust manifold gasket.

These are the Mercury gaskets for those risers. #27-863724.

I suspect that they don't use the ones with metal in them anymore and have been superseded by the above.

The Gaskets already on mine do not have the restrictor holes. Notes from the Forum have indicated that Newer Models did not have them. The replacements I got were Sierra #18-2849. The Merc # 27-863726. There is no coating that I can tell on them. Any Thoughts?

Get the proper Merc gaskets, not aftermarket. And get the right one for the type of cooling system you have. What someone else uses may not be what you need.
Read this service bulletin.

Re: Riser Gasket 98 Merc 5.0L

Thanks Don S. The Engine is cooled Via Outdrive Impeller. I have what has been termed as a "Junk Yard Dog". The Drive is a 75/76 OMC High Profile Stringer. I understand about getting Mercruiser Gaskets and will comply. With the Engine being a 98 do I get the 27-863726 4 Slot, which is what I have now or the 27-863724 with the two Restrictor Holes. What I gather from the many posts on this forum about Riser Gaskets, it would be 27-863726. Do I get the "40 lashes with the wet noodle" for this guess or the "Atta boy you got it right" response?

The gaskets depends on your cooling system. If you remember which post you had the pics of your engine post it, I can tell from the hose routing which gaskets you need.
