Risks of buying a PS3 on eBay?

Looking to buy a PS3 soon because it also doubles as a Blu-Ray player, however, I'm all about saving $$$ so how risky is buying such an item on eBay? Warranty? Return Policy? Is it really worth it or should I just drop the $299 at Walmart and be on my way?

Personally drop the $299 at Wally World and know there wont be any warranty issues with it if you ever need to use the warranty. $299 isnt cheap but you can still laugh at the people who paid $1000+ a year ago for the same machine.

Maybe maybe not.

How much price difference is there with the ebay store? Will they charge tax and shipping?

If it's a big ebay business, they should offer defective returns within a set number of days, with little problems.
If it's someone with 15 ebay auctions, it might be wise to look elsewhere.

Often new stuff is not cheaper on ebay anyway.

Personally, I'd look at ebay, WM and search at decent Internet stores, for the best deal. If it's only a couple of bucks, I'd go for WM.

Sometimes WM get blown out of the water.

I almost bought one off ebay with free shipping, but found one on CL for $250 (before the price drop). If I could do it, I would just buy a new one. Get one off newegg or amazon. You can usually get free shipping & avoid taxes, so there's more cash in your pocket.

My advice would be to either buy a new one from a brick & mortar store.....or buy one off Craigslist. My reasoning for CL would be you can often find people selling systems with a ton of accessories (controllers, games, etc) and you can save a TON of money. I may very well be buying a WII off of there soon.

i would like to say that not only is ebay a good idea, but the ps3 is the most awesome multimedia box out there. i can surf the web and access my computer through the ps3. i have a terabyte external hard drive filled with all of my movies plugged into one of the usb ports, now i have a library of movies at my finger tips just a click of the controller. craigslist is also a good idea but i haven't seen many great deals lately. when you do get a ps3 check through the interwebs and see some of the cool stuff it will do. if you want a gaming system go with the xbox 360.

if you buy a first or second gen ps3 yes but if you buy a $299 ps3 no.

if you buy the new ps3 for $299 they are not backwards compatible. the slim ps3 which is the new one for $299. if you buy a regular ps3 not the slim version you will be able to play some of your games. the ps3 does not allow for all the old games to work. with that said the blue ray player is awesome, mine is hooked to a 50 inch plasma with 1080p and movies are better than seeing them in the theater. plus the ps3 is like a high tech house management system you can do all sorts of cool stuff with it.

definitely worth the purchase. I ended up watching more films with m PS3 than gaming. It also makes a dang skippy multi media system for streaming music & such. If you have netflix for dig hulu then you may want to look into Playon software. Install that on your PC & you can stream your netflix, hulu, & various other media.

If you find an old 20/60 gig solid black gen 1 PS3 for a decent price, then pick it up. Completely backwards compatible & highly sought after.
