the 18.5 ' starcraft hull i picked up recently needs a few rivets.... I checked the id with my dial caliper and am getting .171"ID. is that a special size?

I guess i can try and line of the holes ( they should be close the rivets all around are still good)... and ream the holes to .188" ID and use a 3/16th rivet.

I only have to do maybe 5 holes...it looks like three holes are missing rivets and someone used a pop rivet gun to fill in two other holes. ill just pop them out and use solid rivets in all the holes before I move onto other work on this hull.

I can make my own rivets, since i am a tool maker....but I dont have any marine grade aluminum at the moment...just 6061...

Re: rivet sizes

Ayuh,.... I've always used 3/16" closed end pop-rivets in my tin boats....

So long as ya don't go smaller, it'll be just Fine, 'n not leak....

Just ream the hole to a .187 and throw some 3/16" in there, won't hurt a thing to go bigger.

Re: rivet sizes

I am thinking they really were 3/16th...must have been some oxidation in the hole..

I punched out a bunch of broken and almsot worn down rivets and a ground down about 10 POP rivets a previous owner had replced in some holes.

I couldnt find any rivets close by so i made a bunch at work.. and i made the, .196" dia.....and i ll use a .196 reamer to clean up all the holes and make sure they match rib and hull and are nice and clean and round.

I also made a tool to put on my floor jack to hold the rivet in place while i am inside flaring the other end to fit , by myself....

going to do that tomorrow
