hello, i just recently discovered the joys of riveting my jon boat back to life

anyways, the rivets i used are flat on the outside, but on the inside stick up straight about 3/8 inch.they were called "blind rivets"

the ones from factory are different, they are flat on BOTH sides.

where does one find these types of rivets so that my repairs are better lookin' from this day forward

mike

Re: rivets

I believe you need special tooling to install those type. I am not sure where you could buy them, but you could try an industrial fastener supplier.

Re: rivets

Only thing I know about rivets is how to drill the little boogers out. take a look here:

http://www.mscdirect.com/

On this web page, go to the page box in the top right corner. Enter page number 2027. From there you can click to the next page, 2028, 2029, 2030. Take a look at the ‘closed end sealing rivets’ on page 2031. They make a water tight seal. That page also has the riveting tools.

Now, if you want to drill out the rivets, drill bits start on page 15 …

Good luck. :)

If you only need a few, most big hardware stores have them. Ask for real rivets, or buck rivets.

Once you determine the size & length, you get the rivet.

(If you're in the manufacturing business, and setting thousands of rivets a day: Buck rivets are faster, cheaper, and much, much stronger than the blind, or'pop' rivet.

Putting a boat together--- or several of them a day--, in most places buck rivets are almost as strong, faster, and cheaper to build something with than heli-arc welding it too.)

Anyway:
Cut the rivet about 1/8" or so longer than it sticks through the hole.

With both pieces held firmly together, put the rivet in the hole,

Have someone hold a 'bucking bar', or a big flat hunk of steel against it on one side.

Then, from the other side, you 'buck' with a hand held air hammer. A regular hammer will work, but it is much slower.

The rivet swells both in diameter to fill the hole, and the end you cut off or what is on the other side of the 'head' flattens out bigger than the hole diameter.

And there is a trick to it, you only buck it till the rivet flattens and seals. If you keep banging away at it,,,, you'll squash out the metal under the head you're trying to hold together, causing a weak spot or possibly a bigger hole to deal with than the one you originally drilled..

Re: rivets

Winger Ed is absolutly right, I have bucked a few rivets before, not bad as long as you can get to them. If not I'll use a rivnut. The type that you pull the shank through are called cherry. Aircraft spruce has a lot of both.

Re: rivets

and a tip for you on the buck rivits.swing by local home depote, lowes or whatever home improvement store is available.and pick up some sheet metal.alum prefered since its an alum boat. and buck a few revits. get same thickness as boat metal. cut into pieces and rivet together.bucking rivits isnt hard but it takes a bit of practice to do it. dont know if boat standards are same as aircraft standards as far as riviet but the back side or bucked side should have a higth of 1/2 the shank diamiter and a bucked diamiter of 1 1/2 times the shank.watch tha bucking bar.will eat the heck outa the alim ifin it aint held straight.

Re: rivets

you can buy aluminum rivets that are solid and when you use the air hammer you can modify your bit to fit over the head of the rivet a bit to aid in hammering.
it is a good idea to practice on a test piece.
