I am looking at replacing my old mercarb with a rochester. I have an 84 3.0L and have given up on the mercarb. Are the rochesters any better than the mercarb??

Mercarb is almost the same thing. The accerlater pump is different, but I dont think anything else is.

I just went from Rochester to Edelbrock. I had to buy an adapter for it, but it went on smooth. The boat started right up and idled fine. I still haven't put it in the water, just mounted the carb today. I got sick of trying to tune the Quadrajet.

Do Edelbrock do a 2bbl carb? I can understand the wish to bin the quadra-junk...

Mercarb and Rochy are very similar, but the parts aren't interchangeable. The Rochy has 2 idle mixture screws and the Mercarb has just the one.

Is one better then the other? Some say yes, some say no... I really don't know, or care. If a carb has a problem, either fix the problem, or bin it! Just be careful you don't put a new Rochy on just to find whatever problem you're trying to fix is still there. Carbs are not cheap items, just make sure you have eliminated everything else first...

If you are going to replace it, be careful of some of these big companies selling rebuilts. Getting yours rebuilt is a better bet. I bought a rebuilt from a company called I5 auto on Ebay, and it had wrong parts, and a huge lean spot in the midrange. It is now my spare anchor. I have heard some horror stories of these large rebuild companies.

Most reman carbs are junk. The Rochester carb is far better than the Mercarb, but haven't been made for 25 yrs or so. Which means you'd be getting a reman, which means junk.

Re: rochester vs mercarb

There is a place out of California that is selling reman rochesters for 285 with no core charge on ebay and will buy my core for 40. I am thinking about doing that or go with flyfishingcarbs who guarantee their carbs and they are suppose to be tuned on the bench, they seem pretty reputable and are about the same price but they charge 120 for a core (they don't pay you for yours). Also, they would give me a mercarb instead of a rochester. Anyone have any experience with http://flyingfishcarburetors.com ???
