Rod holder question

Hey Guys-

I have a 20' runabout that I'm going to take fresh water & coean fishing. I don't plan on catching Moby **** or setting any records, rather I'll be going with my little boys.

I need a few rod holders that can accomodate the lake as well as something in the ocean. I know I'll have the drag set to avoid breaking the line which will help the rod holder, but how strong are rod holders? I can't do a flush mount because there's no room and I'd like to use a side mount holder mounted on the outside wall of the boat.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Rod holder question

I think that it really depends on what kind of rod holder you are talking about.... plastic, stainless, etc. In my experience, the basic 20$ pop out and swivel types are actually pretty strong. I don't have experience with these particular ones, but I had some of the west marine brand ones on my last boat and they held up great.

They just have to be stronger than your line, and unless you are running some 200 pound test and planning on snagging another boat, you should be fine

Those are the ones I was looking at, I even tried to put a picture of them here but couldn't figure it out. They look and feel fairly sturdy so I think I'll go with them and tie a leash from the rod to the boat in case it breaks or one of the boys drops their gear. I figure I'll have from 6lb up to 50lb line on. Thanks.

You don't catch Moby ****, Moby **** catches you. ;)

I would not put a rod in a plastic holder in the ocean unless you don't mind loosing the rod and reel. SW fish hit so that that even a loose drag could easily snap that holder right off the boat.

#50 tackle and plastic rod holders is a disaster just waiting to happen.

What would you recommend? I don't mind sitting and holding my gear, but I'm sure my boys will be ready to put it down after just a few minutes.

I wouldn't even put a 25# freshwater rig in one of those plastic holders. I had one of those plastic rod holders bust right of the boat and send my rig into the drink years back, never again...

I custom made the rod holder bases on my boat as they didn't have good bases way back when. Only PITA thing Is I had to drill and tap the bases to accept the rod holder as the bases are not intended for these rod holders. Driftmaster makes what look to be good bases now though, I haven't seen them in person.

I use these 1/2" thick rod holders:

And customized these based:

But see they offer this base now:

Hey Fishrdan- Thanks. That looks perfect for what I need. Just got done looking at Driftmaster's website and I think I'll be getting a few of these. It's kinda funny, they look so darn simple and monkey proof compared to the plastic ones but work better. I'd hate to drop anything over the side since everything I have is pretty new (just got the boat and still setting it up).

Re: Rod holder question

I spoke with David at Driftmaster and he's very polite. I have four bases, holders, and rod resters that should be leaving S.C. today. Hope my wife doesn't find out....

Re: Rod holder question

One thing to be aware of on the driftmasters, if you troll with them (which I do almost exclusively) the port side will loosen if a fish strikes, the fish loosens the "bolt". They make left hand threaded rod holders for the port side so it tightens when a fish strikes. I have all right hand threaded rod holders and nut them from the bottom, on the port side, which does the same thing, tightens the rod holder when a fish strikes.

If you don't troll, I wouldn't worry about the turning issue.

Re: Rod holder question

I had the rod holders from the first link on my boat and would troll for spanish with no problem. I even hooked a 30" cobia using the same setup. I wouldn't troll any large planers or big skirts, but they work very well. Just my 2 cents.

This does not make any sense. Are you saying a planer pulls hardy than a Cobia? A dead one maybe.

:D...of course as soon as it hit i pulled the rod from the holder. I thought it was gonna pull off before I got to it. It hit my spanish setup so I was certainly startled, in a good way. I can see why you thought that though. I wouldn't pull more than a #2 planer with that setup.

How are you doin' on the striper Dingbat?
