I don't remember the brand I have, but it has two plastic bases. I put one on top of the rail and the other under the rail and then used long bolts with wing nuts on the bottom. That way I can remove them when I put the cover on or move them around the boat. Also look in some of the fishing catalogs they have pontoon rail mounts.

Re: Rod holders?

That was a good thread, but the OP was asking specifically about rail mount rod holders. The Cabela's holders impressed me because there are many different styles of holders you can use on their rail mount base. You can get the pontoon rail set up that comes with a medium duty holder or you can up grade to a different holder for a specific application.

Re: Rod holders?

As an avid fisherman who fishes almost exclusively from a toon I can honestly say that I would not trust any of my rods to any of the rod holders listed so far in this thread. They will all work well for little fish like bluegill or crappie, but they either wont hold up to bigger fish, or in the case of plastic rod holders, will deteriorate over time and eventually break. If you are wanting to catch larger fish, or just want holders that will last as long as your boat go with all metal, heavy duty rod holders like Driftmasters, Monsters, Santees, or even the Attwood ones sold by Wallyworld. You can get clamp on bases for any of them, mount bases to your rails, or install them into a rack that can be either permanently attached, or removable. As an example, here are mine on my ole toon....

+1

I've tried lots of junk, but am very happy with Driftmasters.

I didn't want to pay $8 for a pre made base so I used a piece of aluminum bar I had lying around to make those bases. Got 6 Driftmasters mounted to those and another 6 mounted to my stern on a piece if angle iron.

I disagree I have used these for years and have caught 40+ on these and never had an issue. Besides they are guaranteed for life.

No way I would trust my big cat rigs to a design that has 11 possible points of failure and secures the rod with a single screw through some sheet metal. Those look like they would be fine for smaller fish though and a fairly unobtrusive design. Way better than the hook over the rail type. Have not seen those style rod holders in a very long time.
