Rod knocking, how pricey will this be?

I have 4 cylinder 130hp 3.0 mercruiser engine. I was playing around with it today working out the idle issues I had. Well I got the idle issues handled but now I noticed, what I believe is a rod knocking or a bad bearing on one of the rods. Tell me the best and worse case senario please. How much damage is this gonna do to my wallet?

New motor is $3k. Remanufactured motor is $2700. Used motor is $350-$800

However it could be as simple to listening to the flappers rattle, or the coupler coming loose. You wont know until you find the problem

The 3.0L is a noisy engine anyway. They knock and rattle when they need a little bit of a tune-up. Go through everything again from timing to valve lash. Make sure your carb is perfectly clean. Check compression. Suck the oil out and pour it into a clean jar and inspect the contents of the oil filter. If you have rod knock you will have bearing metal in the filter. I'll bet not if you have always had enough oil in it.

Check the rockers, if good, try some seafoam in the oil and run it see if your stuck lifter frees up. Could be a few things. Doesn't sound "deep" enough to be bottom end though...more top end valve train or even waterpump bearing.

Ok I got a stethoscope today and I heard it pretty clear in the exhaust. No where else on the engine. I just recently gave the engine a tune up. I also believe I have a fuel/carb issue. The motor bogs down up around 3-3.5k rpm

That irregular clatter? Exhaust shutter. Have a friend's 3.0 litre that sounds like the crank is about to fly out... It's the shutter. Normal and nothing to worry about. Damage to wallet, :D nil....
