1977 115 hp Johnson (115EL77S).

Started working on getting the motor ready for the summer (I know I am running way behind). Last year when I put her up she was running rough, so I rebuilt the carbs, and she runs smooth, but after about 3-5 minutes she starts to overheat with the muffs on. It has been about 3 years since the water pump was replaced and there are little pieces of rubber that keep getting stuck in the pee hole, so I am thinking that it needs a new impeller and water pump. Gearcase oil looked good.

I was able to find all the bolts that need to be taking off, but having a little trouble understanding where the shift rod retaining screw is at (even with the shop manual I have) and exactly how that connects to the lower unit. I have included two pictures with the carbs off in hopes someone could give me a better idea of where it is at.

You'll have to loosen the screw where the arrow points to in the second pic. This way you can separate the brackets and release the shift rod connector. It takes either a 9/16" or 5/8" flex socket. Don't lose the little bushing in the upper shift rod connector.

Post back on the out come. If it's a 3/8" bolt it will take a 9/16" socket.

Thanks guys for the help. Managed to get the lower unit off. Lots of metal flakes clogging the pee holes and the impeller had grooved the base plate. Bad news is that they do not make a water pump kit for that particular engine, so I am going to half to buy the pieces individually. I think I have identified the major pieces needed, but do I need anything additional like gasket sealant etc? and is there any special way to put the impeller in the housing?
