Rodbolt, Help! '97 DT 75

I dropped the lower unit on my 1997 DT75 to replace the impeller. While putting the lower unit back into position, the shift rod pushed out the "clutch rod boot" (part #25, http://store.brownspoint.com/DT75/fig027-758897.asp <br /><br />This makes it very difficult to get the "pin" on the shift shaft inserted into the "eye" of the shift rod - without the boot holding the top of the shift rod into position, they just don't line up horizontally- verticaly the positioning is fine, but horizontally they are about 1/8" off.<br /><br />If I do manage to get the shift rod and shaft connected properly, is it ok to run without the "boot" in place? Or is there a way to put the boot back in place without removing the powerhead -- it is pretty tight quarters...?

are you talking about the little grommet where the shift rod enters the cowl?

It should be ok to run it without the boot holding, although it does serve a purpose to keep dirt and water out etc. aswell, but you can run your engin without it, just keep it clean and waterfree .....

Thanks the DaeeJayCee -- I assumed the purpose of the boot is to keep out water (as well as holding the clutch rod into position) -- but I wanted confirmation.<br /><br />rodbolt, yes, I am talking about the little grommet where the shift rod enters. <br /><br />Is there anything I can easily remove to get better access to this spot, so I can get the boot back in place -- flywheel, carbs, etc.?

Unfortunately you will have to remove the powerhead, but you must atleast try with some long nose plyers etc. just make sure it doesn't fall into the shaft .....

I did the same exact thing with my DT65! Easy fix, I just took off the oil injection tank and you have easy access to the shift rod, so that you can put the boot on.
