I dropped the lower unit on my 1997 DT75 to replace the impeller. While putting the lower unit back into position, the shift rod pushed out the "clutch rod boot" (part #25, http://store.brownspoint.com/DT75/fig027-758897.asp

This makes it very difficult to get the "pin" on the shift shaft inserted into the "eye" of the shift rod - without the boot holding the top of the shift rod into position, they just don't line up horizontally- verticaly the positioning is fine, but horizontally they are about 1/8" off.

If I do manage to get the shift rod and shaft connected properly, is it ok to run without the "boot" in place? Or is there a way to put the boot back in place without removing the powerhead -- it is pretty tight quarters...?
