Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

I have twin 1997 Yamaha 200 2-strokes. About a month ago, I couldn't get either engine to tilt up or down. My marine mechanic worked on both engines and they worked. He said they seem to be losing fluid slowly. Yesterday, my starboard engine would not, at first, go up or down. Eventually it went up, but would not go back down. I took off the fill cap and a little air came out. I put some tilt/trim fluid in with a syringe, but it didn't seem to need much before it came back out.

The engine still does not go up or down and I am not sure how to work the air out.

I was told to release the pressure screw and let the engine fall. Then, the tilt unit will lift the motor back up. Tighten the release screw. Then, release the air and refill the unit and release the
screw and let fall again. Repeat as necessary.

Rodbolt, will this work?

Thanks,

Richard

maybe
the system is self bleeding so I dont think air is your problem. does your system use a bubble shaped plastic resevoir with a 4 bolt trim motor?
also does the trim motor run when the button is pushed?
I am trying to find if the problem is electric or hydraulic.
post me back with a description of what trim system you have. is the fill plug a metal hex or a plastic cap?
good luck and keep posting

On a related note, I am having trouble with the tilt bleeding down slowly on a 1999 pro 60 yamaha. Would like to know how to deal with that.

Thanks!

mark

Richard

That is the process to bleed the motor according to the Yamaha manual. If you like I can try to fax the pages to you. PM me. But if you're losing fluid it sounds, unfortunately, a little more serious.

Woodrat,

In the past few years Yamaha has had quality control problems with debris in their inline motor trim units. The only fix is to take them completely apart, flush out every passageway, and replace all the seals and orings and valve tips. Then they work fine for years.

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

Rodbolt, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I have not had many chances to take a look a the boat what with these hurricanes hitting us every three weeks...

But, here is what I did. I lowered the engine with the tilt pressure relief valve and it lowered, then the tilt raised the engine back up. I released the filler cap and air came out. Repeated three times until no more air was coming out. Tried again and ugh!, did'nt go down! Again had to release relief valve but it did go up and down afterward.

Also, did same process to other engine whose tilt and trim were working. Much air came out.

Rodbolt, I don't know what you mean by bubble-shaped reservoir, although it does look plastic. Also, I forgot to look if it was 4 bolts. I will do that today if the hurricane permits.

The motors seem to work fine. Problem appears to be/have been hydraulic.

Thoughts?

BTW, thanks Fishie1. And, yes, I would appreciate you emailing that to me. My email address is info-deletethis-@richard-deletethis-chinn.com

Richard

hello
I looked up the showa manual and about all I can see is the up relief valve is stuck. those valves were failure prone. the valvles are also about 100 dollars each. the omc fastract uses the same valve body assy as the yamaha showa units. its also only about 300 dollars assembled :)
good luck and keep posting.

Rodbolt,

I looked on the yamahamotors.com page and couldn't find an up relief valve. I could find a manual valve sub-assembly and an up relief spring listed. Before I go to my dealer, you wouldn't happen to have a part number or a different name for this valve, would you?

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

hello
not here at home. if I get a chance I can try to look for it. its a delicate hydraulic pump assy and with no training or the factory manual you will get in trouble if you dissasemble the valve body.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt,

Thanks, you convinced me to not try to replace myself. I'll let my marine mechanic take a shot or I'll be on the lookout for a used tilt/trim on eBay.

Thanks all for help. With yall's help, I can use the tilt/trim, even if I have to lower it manually at times.

Regards,

Richard

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

definately take it to the shop. typically a problem with the down circuit is blocked filters and or stuck open valves between the shuttle and the rams, usually caused by the seal ring and backing ring on the rams breaking down. to clean the filters that are causing your problem the pump body and resevoir need to both be removed. to do this the engine needs to be suspended/supported. good luck.

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

Fishie1, Got it! Thanks!

Ben, Rod, I have made an appointment with my marine mechanic to repair/overhaul both tilt units. The timing is good because my son is currently in a cast, I'm removing trees from the hurricanes (I live in Florida) and my boating time is non-existent.

Richard

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

Final chapter:

Both the tilt and trim cylinders on the starboard engine began to lose fluid at a fast rate. The marine mechanic noticed at first glance that the tilt cylinder seal was completely missing! I guess that explains that!

Port tilt and trim cylinder seals were replaced before I bought the boat in January and do not seem to leak and are reliable. So, hopefully, that is the end of this thread.

Thanks again, guys (or gals).

Re: Rodbolt: How to bleed Yamaha 200 tilt/trim?

i like to smear grease around the seals to help protect them from marine growth/uv etc. the wiper is a semi hard plastic material prone to cracking/breaking up. smear some grease onto the ends of your trim rams also. lastly as much as possible keep your engine in the down position, this will prolong the serviceable life of the rams as the chrome coating breaks down and causes seal problems.
