hello
before starting any maint check the shift rod. inspect it very carefully. the lower unit will require the cover nut tool as well as a decent puller. I use the J-style from OMC and a snap on puller. odds are you will need heat in a bottle as well.you may wish to replace the fuel pumps and go through the carbs just cause ya can. clean the oil strainer in the engine tank and replace the remote oil tank filter as well as cleaning the remote tank. clean the pressure relief valve and replace the grommet,t-stats and water pump.

good luck and keep posting

rodbolt ,when i go to the dealer and ask for a j-style from omc will they know what it is.the manual gives a yami part #(.the dealer is omc & yami) .Is the puller the type that has the threaded rods? When you say inspect the shift shaft very carefully .What am i looking for (pitting on the steel shaft).

pitting and rust. most times you can see the shaft becoming hour glass shaped at the gap between the swivel and the exhaust housing.
the puller jaws I am refering to look like log J rods and are for pulling v4-v6 jonny/rudes bearing carriers.best tool ever for mercs and yammi's. good luck and keep posting
ps the J style pullers can be used with a standard harmonic balancer puller

I would replace the fuel connector with a solid piece of hose. I would not want to see the water pressure below 10 PSI at WOT.

Thanks rodbolt and ray .picked up omc j-hooks but not much luck on the cover nut tool ,dealer showed me theres and said its big dollars ,any ideas where you can purchase one (tool supplier) .it does look i could make something up, the capnut does not look rusty around the nut and looks like it may have been undone before. the shift shaft has some light rust at the gap. i'll pick up a gauge and see what it reads.

hello
I dont ever attempt to remove the cover nut with the tool. just drill 3 5/16ths holes in it and crack it out. its faster simpler and easier. good luck and keep posting

Thats what you have to do most of the time with salt water units. Otherwise either the Mercury,OMc or Yamaha tool will work. My son has a shop in FL. They get out the drill and torch when they start on a gear case. Last time I took apart a saltwater one because I needed the gears, I used a die grinder. Precision Machine in Clearwater,FL. carries a lot of special tools.
