again, I dont think teleflex ever made a trim guage for the 3 wire yamaha sender on the 1990-1995 v6 yamahas. best I recall the 5 volt reference came from the digital guage.
on the 1990-1995 2.6L motors the engine DOES not have to be running, the 3.1 L motors it does.
1990-1995 2.6L motors the trim sender must work as designed with the correct hardware or no auto transfer, the 3.1L motors did not use the trim sender and used a pulser coil signal.
1996 and up v6 2 stroke all used the same controls system as the early 3.1L motors.
