Re: rodbolt

how old is the prov?
usually that crack is due to corrosion building up at the joint of the carrier, spannernut and housing. all are different materiels. most older yamahas did not hold more than about 3 psi for pressure testing.
I have seen some try welding but none with any great success.
what is the year and shaft length of your unit?
good luck and keep posting

Re: rodbolt

The Pro v is a 1995 model and has started to leak lower unit oil when I tried to top it up tonite the oil came out of the small vent holes and around the prop shaft, when I drained it out it was milky and the oil was new in March {mercury Synthetic] . Should I get it welded by a Propeller Shop ar start looking for a lower unti?
Is this crack common?? Thanks Kelly Smith

It is not uncommon in saltwater use. Your best bet would to find at least a eplacemnt housing.

Re: rodbolt

I have to agree with ray. without looking at your unit its hard to say. but the crack is normaly a saltwater corrosion problem. mercs and yammi's do it with regularity. merc actually recommends bearing carrier removal yearly to prevent it. the oil from the vent hole is most likly shift shaft seal or driveshaft seals. both are easy to replace.
I did see the seals on one get replaced by digging them out with a pick and a self tapping screw.
good luck and keep posting
