hey i have a omc 460 you were helping me on (no spark) you said look in the manual to find where the rotor should be poining in reference to the lockdown caps. my manual doesn't show anyting like that. i am at tdc and my rotor is pointing at #1 cylinder on the cap but i can rotate the cap a good ways in both direction. do you know any manual that would show that??

thmirmg,
Is it the cap or rotor you can rotate a good ways?Is a good ways on the rotor (distributor shaft) more than 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch?
Unless the motor is not turning the distributor I don't think your problem is there.Unless your distributor has no breaker points in it,then you have a system I can't help you with.
DHP

thmlrmg,
You're getting in a tither over something that Really Doesn't Matter.........

Bring the Engine around to TDC, Compression stroke, on #1 Cylinder..............
Wherever the rotor is pointed Then , IS #1 on the Cap.......

IF everything else is up to snuff, It'll Start......

Re: rodbolt

sorry i should have explained this, we removed the distributor to turn the oil pump to pump the oil out that had water mixed in it and was to hard to hand pump out. we marked the dist. in 4 places and when it went back in the motor doesn't attempt to fire. we check and were 180 out and now we are back to #1 tdc but when i put the dist in, i am not sure if we are a tooth or to off in putting the dist back in if i don't know in reference to the lockdown bolts on the cap.

hello
dude its in the service guide. the cap hold downs in relation to the # 1 cap tower. usually it points towards # 1 cyl. with points it really doesnt matter as long as you remember wheree # 1 capo tower is. that is why I said do it as per the manual. buy a different one if you must. I have never seen a manual that did not list the dist location, cap orientation and fireing order as well as dist rotation. post me back the make and part number of your manual and I will see if I have one like it so I can get us both on the same page. I explained it once but must have been confusing.
post back with your manual number
