roll& tip painting a aluminum lapstreak boat

have a starcraft ss which i am planning to paint.all the instructions and info says to roll on vertical and tip horizontal.has anyone run into a problem rolling up against the ribs with the roller (running) before tipping with the brush?any tips on your completed paint job would be welcomed. (paint used, type of roller&brush)

I use Rustoleum Proffesional thinned with acetone and I use Valspar hardner in it, I tried the Roll and Tip method
with no success at all, I quickly went to an HVLP spray gun and improved my results 100%.
I'm just saying!!

I used the Roll n Roll method and the paint from Woodonglass page 10 http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=384982&page=10
and it has a great shine to it and it is hard as nails.

I used Petit Easypoxy. Garbage paint so use something else.

I think the Valspar Oil Based Tractor Paint along with the Acrylic Enamel Hardener additive (Sold @ Tractor Supply, Inc.) will yield a durable and glossy finish. But...As with any paint job, the end results depend on totaly on the prep. Aluminum must be prepped with extreme care in order for the paint to adhere properly. This takes time and patience and attention to detail. Without this it is bound to fail no matter what product you use. There is a lot of good information, albeit some controversial, on how to properly prepare an aluminum boat for painting. Google it up for yourself and you will find a plethera of information on "How-To". You will have to be the final judge on your methodology. We'll be here to help when needed.

Try the different techniques out, roll and roll, roll and tip, brush and tip...spraying if you have the option. Personally used roll and tip on my boat, I tried roll and roll but technique didn't work for me. After doing my trailer I kinda like the brush and tip method now, seemed to be the one that flowed nicest for me. Practice on another surface before touching the boat, its a learned technique and even just a few feet of practice helps. Whatever ya do, if its been longer than about 3 minutes, don't try to fix a run, you do more harm than good. Easier to sand a nice straight run than to fix the ripple effect caused by brushing over curing paint.

These are just tips from my own experiences, they may or may not apply to you.

I agree with JDA. I tried the roll and roll and it did not feel very comfortable at all. I also found that the roller and brush technique worked best for me. Also what JDA said about the runs is spot on. I also found that when I tried to fix the pain it ended up looking worse. When I sanded and painted again you could not tell where the drips were. Do a YouTube search on roll and tip. They have videos on how it should be performed.
