Rollers or bunks

I have a 1964 starcraft -- and need a new trailer. I am told a roller trailer is not the best for a riveted boat like the starcraft I have. It is easier to find a roller type trailer rather than a bunk, but I dont want to damage the hull. I appreciate your thoughts.

Re: Rollers or bunks

I prefer a bunk trailer, and they are cheaper. In my neck of the woods bunk seem to out number roller trailers.

I find good used trailers of any kind are hard to find.

Bunks distribute the weight on the hull better than a roller with its point loading, a lot depends on how far you intend to trailer it on a regular basis and the type of launches you are going to boat from.

I like rollers because you can pick a boat out of the water without even the trailer being wet, there a few launches here where you can only back up to the waters edge and getting the boat off and onto a bunk trailer would be impossible.

That being said there are combination roller/bunk trailers that combine both qualities but with none of the advantages of each type. I think the bigger the boat is and the more fragile the hull and the longer distance you intend to tow means a bunk is a better choice. The new modern roller trailers have many small rollers that carry loads just fine and may be what you are looking for.

Most guys around here use bunk trailers for AL hulls because of the point loading of rollers causing issues with rivet seams and denting etc. I think bunk trailers are easier to maintain and safer if you forget to cinch up the bow eye when your backing down or other dangerous scenarios where the boat could slip off the trailer.

For me I would never own a bunk trailer only because some of our ramps here are extremely shallow and after seeing some guys try to launch with a bunk and then leave in frustration I can slide mine off and winch her on with little fuss. If point loading was an issue I would add more rollers or buy a fiberglass boat and be done with it.

I'm sure there are guys with bunks who will say how much they love them but I am definetely a roller guy, I single person launch my boat a lot in shallow water so I am biased. Both are fine, they both have a place.

Good luck with your choice.
