Rookie mistakes

Well, sadly this story is something my buddies and I experienced first hand. We were the idiots... I am new to the forum, and thought you guys might get a good laugh from it. We surely did. My buddies and I were on a boat in the Hood Canal up in Washington. We headed out for a couple day fishing venture and were going to just sleep on shore somewhere.

Three small town western Colorado boys learned that when you read the tide charts wrong it can make for a long day. We don't have tide changes in Colorado! We were just lucky the tide didn't go the other way too far. We thought the tide was going to rise more, so we tied extra lines, couple anchors, etc. We woke up on the beach at first light and the water was a long ways from the boat; it was sitting high and dry. After a long day of sitting on the beach the water finally came up high enough around 2 and we could get back to fishing. Long day of sitting, but a good story in the end!

Nice looking boat. No harm, no foul. Seems like you've got the right attitude. But, did you catch anything ?

Well, it was sure an interesting adventure! One of the buddies was in the military at the time, and we actually rented the boat from the military base. We weren't cleaning it, it was the beginnings of a long day of trying to get the boat back in the water. We decided that if the Egyptians could roll huge stones on logs and build pyramids than we should be able to roll a boat across some logs and get it to the water. After a very long day of using levers and fulcrums (drift wood and stumps) we had the boat up on logs, and moved about 8 feet closer to the water. Didn't do too much other than occupy our time. We did finally catch some fish in the evening. Not sure exactly what kind of bass they were, maybe some of you guys could help. Some sort of rock bass we thought. Also caught a ton of those smaller sharks. Pretty sure they are referred to as sand sharks, or dog sharks but could be wrong there too. It was pretty crazy fishing the salt water. We never knew what we were going to pull in. Lots of variety compared to our Colorado lakes and streams. Our original intent was to try and catch some pink salmon. We had heard rumors that they were running all over the hood canal; none were found though.

I've heard when the tide is out that much and the moon is right and the cosmos is aligned llamas and miniature giraffes run along the shore.

I spend a lot of time on a barrier island on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and have often seen people learn lessons like that. The typical profile is the too-big boat about 10' from the water, sun sets, wind dies and bugs arise, from greenheads to no-see-ums, a tired and sunburned girlfriend (soon to be ex) and a know-it-all boyfriend, humbled. No fresh water, no bathrooms, no food, no tide for another 4 hours. A delightful sight from my screen porch across the rim of a gin and tonic.

I've had my close calls, cutting it too close up in the marsh while hunting. it's how we learn.

The tides, and time, wait for no man.

Personally I'd be glad the boat ended up where it did. How would you have felt if it had broken free & drifted a couple miles off-shore???

Oh we were definitely glad the opposite didn't happen! We thought the tide was going to rise and had two anchor lines out, and extra lines tied to shore. We still get a good laugh when we get together and tell the story.

Been there done that. Fishing Savannah area , catching fish having a good time. Not noticing how fastthe tide was going out. (its a six foot tide shift) By the time I did and tried to get out ouf the tidal creak, I ended up on a sandbar. Spent a goodly amount of time just hanging and exploring and waving at other boats as they went by. Embarrassing but nothing hurt and big time lesson learned..

my dad did this on purpose to retrieve his sunken g3, actually i swam the frigid water to get a line on it drag it to shore high tide pull the plug wait for tide to go out, then reinstall the plug and wait for the tide to come back in, boat floats, tow to the ramp, take home. he then flushed the motor out and got it running that night. he fed me vodka and cinnimon snapps it was november, my brother tried to swim to it first, his legs wouldnt work the water was so cold, i had to pull him out of the water. i have seen the tide go out on lots of boats, you are not alone

While running my RC boat I didn't notice that the tide was coming in. I found myself alone on a very small island.

Stayed a little too long in my small boat in Nov-- water was cold. Trimmed the motor all the way up-- got out and she floated-- walked her to deep water. The smart move would have been to wait 3 - 4 hours..
