Welcome to iboats 321,

Rope start an electric...no problem. Just turn on the key , manually choke as needed and pull the rope. No damage to motor.

Just a length of rope with a knot. A handle of some sort is nice. A piece of wood dowel with a hole drilled for the rope will work. They usually came from the factory with an emergency starting rope. Look under the hood for a plastic pouch.

If this is a small boat, make sure nobody is directly behind you when you pull the rope. The knot in the end can leave a nasty bruise if it hits a person in the face. Curious as to why you thought there would be any damage to the engine. The electric starter does the same thing the rope does. It spins the engine via the flywheel.

Yup -- that's what the groove and notch in the flywheel is for.
