I haven't tried it yet, can't imagin it being any fun.

If my battery dies, and the engine stops, what good is a rope start? If it won't run when the battery dies, why would it with a rope start? or will there be enough juice to run the motor if the dead battery is disconnected?

Thanks!

Kevin

All depends on what you have. Year, model, etc.

Better than a paddle!

Re: Rope Starting a 70HP

Last year I was having a problem with my neutral safety switch on my 1983 75hp Rude and got stuck out in the Chesapeake Bay and the key wouldn't work. Before I asked for a tow, I thought what the heck and tried the pull start method using the emergency rope and followed the directions in the motor manual. I was surprised at how easy it was to start. The motor started on the second try and there was barely any resistance in turning the flywheel. Very easy. It probably helped that the motor was warm.

Once the motor is running you don't need the battery. The battery is only used for turning the electric starter. This is why you can jump start a motor and make it home. This is also why motors with a pull start do not have a battery.

Now I make sure that I always have that rope with me. You never know.

71whaler -
Curious that the engine died when the battery died if that's correct. That's whats confusing me.
