Rot or Not

For the first time in 27 years, I pulled off the old carpet to install some new carpet. I noticed some large black marks about 5 inches wide running down some of the wood. Is this rot or just normal discoloring in the wood. I will attempt to post a picture. The wood is not soft that I can tell.

with a little luck you caught it just in time be sure and let it completely dry out then seal it before replacing with carpet. if it was mine i would go to wally-world and get me some roll on bed liner and put it on and then replace carpet.

The signature of rot is soft wood. Let it dry. I wouldn't have carpet in my boat as it retains moisture which rot like.

That is why I am stumped. The wood feels hard and I don't get a different sound when tapping it with a screwdriver. I think I'll try putting a screw in the black area and see if it pulls out easily. Besides the bedliner stuff what else would you recommend for sealing the floor ?

If you are in Canada use S1 sealing epoxy and after 3 coats, put 3 coats West System Epoxy and paint or varnish if exposed to Sunlight.<br /><br />If in the USA use CPES from the Rot Doctor and West System.
