Re: rotary engines ?
The fuel mileage is totally dependent on how the vehicle is driven. For some reason everyone thinks that a rotary automatically get bad mileage. Well if you drive conservatively you can get great mileage out of them. The problem is with an engine that revs so easily and is so fun to bring to or way past redline no one wants to drive conservatively.

I have an 84 RX-7. It was the first year fuel injected engines were available from Mazda. When the car was still stock I could easily get 25-30 mpg. For any 84 that is good. However, most tanks I was lucky to get over 20. Well, I am the only one to blame for that.

Polution on the other hand is an issue. The new Renisis engine in the RX-8 has helped that issue quit a bit. Exhaust in the older design was impossible to recirculate. you know EGR valves. The new engine allows some recirculation. This helps emmisions and thermal characteristics. But, the emmisions are nothing a catylitic converter can't solve. My car originally had three.
