rotted deck and stringers

Just found out my good deal wasn't so good. After removing what I thought was the bad deck flooring, I discovered the original flooring underneath. All rotted along with stringers and heavy (waterlogged ?) styrofoam. Need to know what to use for new stringers, new styrofoam, and some sort of step by step method of doing both. I have read a few posts on replacing the plywood decking but need to take care of under work first. Any help will be appreciated. Dave

There may not be a step by step but some of the restorations threads are very good and done by very skillful people.

It will be a lot of work to get that boat back on the water. But good luck, and if you stick it out, you will have a boat that you can be really proud of.

You really need to sit down and spend a lot of time reading through the restoration forum. I've done two boats now, and I'd be willing to bet you've got a bad transom as well as what you've found so far.

For the materials to use, it just depends on your boat. On one of mine the original stringers were 2x4's and 2x6's so that's what I used for the repair (with fiberglass over it of course). On my Checkmate the stringers aren't really structural, more there as a deck support, so I used 1X lumber with fiberglass. On many other boats the stringers might play more of a structural role for the hull and require marine plywood as the core material. Transoms are ALWAYS marine grade plywood because of strength considerations.

The foam is 2 part pour foam, 2 pound density. US Composites sells it, along with all the fiberglass supplies you'll need. For the fiberglass resin, epoxy is far superior to polyester in terms of water resistance, adhesion to existing fiberglass, strength, and ease of use/mistake tolerance for those with less experience. It costs more, but IMO is worth it.

But again, spend as much time as it takes looking through other rebuilding projects until you know where you need to go.

So what kind / brand boat are we dealing with? fiberglas or aluminum? Post a couple of pictures (they are worth a thousand words)

Next take a deep breath, this site is a wealth of knowledge and experience to help you through this.

Finally prepare to roll up your sleeves to get-r-done.

Good luck

There are good video's on youtube and MAS epoxy. Jamestown supplies has some too.

As stated, epoxy is the best resin, as it forms a better bond to the polyester resin boat builders use.

When doing mine, I used a thin resin and slow hardener to give the best working times.

Might consider getting one of those oscillating saws t get under the strings and make flush cuts and thight spaces. They make for good sanders too in low clearance places.

Welcome to iBoats!

Start with this Thread and read it ALL the way through.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=355668

It will tell you everything you need to know and show you too! USComposites.Com is a good supplier for your Fiberglass. Use Ext. Grade Plywood for your stringers and your Transom. Go to page 76 on OOPS thread for his Peanut Butter recipe to do your glue ups and your filleting.

Good Luck

I'm just sayin...:D

My boat has a steel reinforced inside/aluminum plate outside transom. So I think I'm OK there. I will post some pics in a few days for all to check out and offer any help. Sure do appreciate all the responses. Thanx, Dave

I PROMISE you, your transom was NOT like that when it was NEW. It is NOT supposed to be that way now. It is NOT correct. Someone did that to TRY and re-inforce it because it was rotten and weak. IT needs to be fixed the RIGHT way. You need to post pics so the guys on here can help you with advise on how to get the job done.

Thanks guys, I will definately try to get some pics up in the next few days so someone can make suggestions on my transome too. I have the old flooring (decking) out and took out all the old water soaked and mouse eaten styrofoam! Yuck! I still have the stringers in although very rotted. But, want to keep them in until I can get some measurements and pics uploaded for future help. Keep the help coming!!!

Sometimes we get a guy on here that says they'll slap another deck on top of their rotten deck just to get them by until they can get a better. Looks like you bought your boat from THAT guy.

Welcome to the forums. Good luck with fixing your boat should you decide to proceed.:)
