Hello all, I have a 1991 Penn Yan 245 Contender, I've only had this boat since spring of 2015. While Winterizing it this Fall and removing the battery's I noticed one of the Horizontal wooden shelves was rotten, of course it would be, the storage compartment above it drains directly onto the wooden shelf. Looking more into it, the vertical support is rotten at the top as well. I have since put this boat away for the Winter months, and I'm going on memory, but was wondering how these 2 pieces are constructed? Laminated into the transom and bottom of the boat? If I grind out the old ones, will there be slots or places for the new wood? Anybody ever do this? Thanks in advance. D

I don't have any pics now, as the boat is put away until April. I checked for solid wood at the bottom and all seemed solid. This rot is 100% from water draining from above, not saying any of the other isn't bad, but to me they all seemed ok. Thanks

Not really able to tell until you start digging into the rotted wood an see how far it goes. Pictures do help, if you get the opportunity before April. Otherwise, plan on a big spring project for the boat. Lots of thread here on the Resto section of folks starting with a few pieces of exposed wood and then finding more as they dig deeper. A 25 year old boat is prime time for the wood structure to be rotting unless it has been well maintained.

Thanks, I'm thinking for a piece of mind I will bring it to a local Marine Structure repair shop and have them fix the battery shelf and check out the Stringers, Bulkhead, and Transom. I was told by the previous owner that he had it all looked at a few years back, but, who knows! I just don't want to get into huge structural repairs on this boat. Thanks.
