Re: rotton deck what thickness and flotation

I happened to have recenty used the aeromarine 300/21 Epoxy Resin and hardner, went through 15 gallons total, easy to work with 1-1 ratio, get the metering pumps, they are very accurate.

Peanut butter is super simple to make, mix up resin/hardner very well, start adding your wood flour, use a drill mixer and keep adding thickener until consistency is achieved, I then scooped the stuff into a cake decorator bag, snip the end open and "Presto" you are laying a nice bead of p-butter that can easily be shaped to your requirements. Making P-Butter uses up quite alot of resin, so I would recommend the 3 gallon kit for starters.

I will not need much peanut butter enough for a strip down the center for one stringer 3/4" plywood approx. 8' long and one rib approx. 20" long also 3/4" plywood rib will disect the long stringer and thus be 10" on either side of the stringer. ok. your suggested material is 300/21 epoxy resin, mix well with hardner and add thickner. I assume the thickner is the wood flour. am I correct? I have everything ready to install the stringer except the peanutbutter. I like the idea of a cake decoratoe bag. Thanks I'll givit a go if the weather permits tomorrow. I will round off top of stringer and glass it in after p'butter dries. then install deck and fibreglass everything in as thick as i possibly can. advise well appreciated.

In reading your last post I notice you stated that you would wait for the P-Butter to dry and then glass, you may find it much easier to perform the fillet, then immediatly follow it up with whatever glass you are using, much easier to get rid of air and make the turn with a soft fillet, just be gentle with a 6inch foam roller since the P-Butter will be soft.

I used wood flour and milled fibers mixed together.

Good luck with your project.

Re: rotton deck what thickness and flotation

Wow ... the more research I do the more confused I get. searched for epoxy vs poly and now I dion:t know where i am at. I was planning to use "Bondo" resin with the supplied hardner. then use the same resin to apply fiber glass matting or cloth and now Im wondering what I really need to do. I read US composits article on resins. and am still confused ... will the Bondo resin and hardner do the same thing as the materials US Composits has. The bondo materials I was planning to use are those used for fiberglass body work. incidently I am ready to install the stringer.. weather permitting i will mix bondo resin and hardner with wood flour. for the peanutbutter ... I have not found a source for the chopped fiber .. would I make that myself by cutting up mat ? Basiclly I understand that before the PB dries I should start glassing in the stringer for ease of work with the fillet ... am I correct or not.... it has been fun and educational as far as Ive gotten Thanks for all the info and sorry Im such a dummy.

Use Marine grade; no auto "Bondo"
And if you repair your own car, go get the pro stuff from a body shop parts dealer. Bondo absorbs water, enough said.

It's good to put glass on before the PB dries because you wont need to grind the PB before you glass in...It just makes life a little eaiser.

Somewhere on here I read something about a tool. The user reffered to it as "a Demeral tool on steroids" He gave the name for it but i can't for the world remember it. it was good for cutting through fiberglass. Can anybody refresh my memory I want to purchase onr.

That'd be a roto-zip. A "dremel tool on steroids".

A demerol tool would be....... something else :)

Re: rotton deck what thickness and flotation

Ok Im still working on the boat.... it has been a chore .. have all the rotton stuff ripped out. Tried to post pictures on here but was unable to. Have two questions ...one is about the hard material that was used to glue the rotton stringers, the edges of the deck were also glued with the same material. I suppose it was some sort of commercian PB. Is there any way to dissolve it or do I just have to chip it out ? another .. I am in a quandry about replacing the deck. What would happen if I jus glued carpet to the hull
and did away with a deck.. How durable is the fiberglass hull ? will it deteriorate if i do that .. I will be using the boat mainly for slow crusing and fishing ... no water sports for me .

Any advise will be appreciated.
