I have a Classic Fifty, Carbs rebuilt last year. Fresh fuel and ran good in driveway with ears on but when took it out I could hardly get it started and when it did it ran really rough. When gave it throttle it bogged down real bad, would hardly go. I found a spot and was going to stop and clean the plugs but, yep you guessed it left the plug wrench at home. Trimmed the motor back down and fished a while when started to leave it ran like a new motor, so I fished more. when I went to head it in it did the same thing bogged down and would hardly idle enough to get on to trailer. any help would be greatly appreciated.

1st job is check compression then spark, I suspect these will check out OK.

Sounds like another carb rebuild will be in your agenda soon, but before to do that:
  • How are the fuel lines? Old fuel lines and modern fuel don't make good bed fellows, if the fuel lines perish bits will accumulate in the carbs a cause no end of grief. Check them thoroughly, just because they look good on the outside does not mean they are good on the inside.
  • Check fuel filter.
  • Fuel tank vent open / not blocked?
  • See what the primer bulb is doing, if collapsing there is a fuel system blockage upstream of the bulb.
  • If when the engine bogs down and then picks up again when the primer bulb is squeezed then the fuel pump is probably failing.
  • Install clear tube between the fuel pump and 1st Carb, run engine and check the fuel passing through the clear tube for air bubbles.
If air bubbles are present work backwards and find the leak / blockage and fix it. Don't forget a blockage / leak can also be inside the fuel tank.
If no air bubbles the problem is likely to be carb or fuel pump related, I suspect carbs.

Check for blockage in the exhaust tuner.------How long have you owned this motor.
