I have a 1980 115 hp evinrude TLCSA. I am having problems getting it to idle any length of time without it coughing and shutting down. Would this problem be caused from the motor not having thermostats? If so what thermostats should be used in this motor? Just acquired this motor and would like to get it going. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

Are the thermostats out now ?? What's the compression on it ?? How's it run at top end ??

The thermostats are out, compression is good and if you can get it to open-up it will run like a scalded dog.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your mtr for the thermos. Get them in and try it and see what happens. You should be able to buy them right here on I-Boats.

Might have scored pistons/stuck rings. Take the exhaust cover off and have a look. Seen many, wont idle worth a damn but go like hell top end! Usually caused from low quality oil and no de-carbing over the life of the engine.
