I have an Evinude 1971 60 hp, model 60173c, sn J10216, and would truly appreciate some help.

The engine idles a bit rough, and when in the water will die as soon as it is put in gear. On the stand it seems like the 3rd cylinder is trying to fire, but only sometimes.

The boat came with 2 gas cans. The one I happened to begin useing was full of sediment. The engine got harder and harder to start and would not stay running.

I have replaced the tank, and the fuel looks clear, but after running for about 15 minutes, the engine still misses, and idles rough.

I cleaned the screen, though it wasn't bad. The plugs are all dark and wet. Is this what is termed fouled?

I first tried to clean and gap the plugs with no change, then replaced them with plugs that were supplied with the boat, though they are a different number.

I have an Intertec manual that lists the plug as a champion QL77JC4. There is a sticker on the engine that calls for a L77J4, which is what I pulled out of the engine. The replacements are champion QL78YC.

Is the Ql78YC a replacement plug? What is the difference?

The new plugs run the same as the old. I have tried adjusting the slow idle mixture for each of the 3 cylinders, but the best I can get is all plugs firing occassionaly. I think it is basically running on 2 cylinders, with the 3rd firing intermittantly.

I go back and forth thinking that the engine is starving, or flooding. Doesn't the wet plugs indicate too rich a mixture??? What should my next step be?

Thanks for any help,
Harvey
