I took the pontonn boat for a ride this afternoon. The motor ran fine for the first hour. Then it seemed like it was only running on one cylinder. I took out the plugs and they looked ok (they are not new). We barely made it back to shore. The motor would continue to stall.

I took out the inline fuel filter. Is this serviceable or do I have to get a new one?

I noticed that there are two fuel pumps on the engine. Do they have to be serviced?

Any thoughts?

What is the model number of your 35. By your description I am will to bet it is a 35 triple manufactured between 1996 and 2000. But without the model number however it is very difficult to assist you.

The model number is J35VL3SIF. It's a 2001.

This afternoon:
- I replaced the plugs
- checked the inline filter
- checked the screens on the fuel pumps.

I left the boat by the dock. The engine was hard to start. Once it started I left it idle for about 10 minutes. Then it began to run rough and then quit. Someone said there might be water in the fuel. Thoughts?

water is a possibility, also if you are running off a 5 gallon tank from the same year try a different one. but i had the same issue with a 2000 25 hp......15 mins into its first run from the showroom floor it started running rough had no power, hard to start ....it was the powerpack.

Do you have the smart check gauge and is it working? Does the warning horn work? When was the last time the water pump impeller was changed out? Is the oil injection still hooked up if it is git rid of it.

Remove the tank and mixing chamber disconnect the short fuel line running from the fuel filter to the OMS chamber. Connect the long hose that ran from the OMS mixing chamber to the carbs directly to the fuel filter. The oil mixing system has a very high rate of failure and it will not sound the low oil no oil alarm because the mixing tank is full of gasoline with a little oil.

The next thing to do is to follow the CDI trouble shooting guide. Unfortunately The triple 35s are not really in the guide but follow the instructions for the Optical V4s. The basic instructions are close enough (they start on page 57) to help you determine what the issue could be if it is electronic. Do not rule out a faulty voltage regulator. If you do not have the BRP/OMC factory service manual I highly suggest you get one from marineengine.com

Also use the parts schematic to help when looking for where and how parts go.

Re: Rough running 35hp Johnson

I got a fresh tank of gas. The engine started right up. But, then after 10 minutes it quit and wouldn't start.

The oil injection system must have been removed by a previous owner.

I read some where that the engine heat sensors can go bad. It was suggested to remove the Tan wires. I looked engine over and the tan wires were integrated into rubber fittings and it didn't look like they would be removable. I'll leave the engine sit till tomorrow and try starting it again. I'll look at some of the parts schematic and try to locate the sensors.

If it's an electrical issue I'll have to take it to a service center. :(

You are mixing the fuel 50:1 right? There is only one temp sensor it is item 23 in the enclosed link it just unplugs. I doubt it is your problem. Have you checked the water pump impeller? Do you have a stream of water coming out the of the tell tale while it is running? I have asked several questions If you don't answer them I can't help you diagnose the problem.

Yes, I mixed the oil at 50:1. No I didn't check the water pump impeller, but there is a very good stream of water exiting the engine.

Well I took the engine to the local dealer. They deteremined that it was a power pack. Thanks everyone for helping out.
