Here we go! I have a 96 johnson 50 three cylinder. It idles an 8 out of 10(10 being perfect). And from idle to about 20% throttle, it falls apart. From about 20% to wot, runs great!. The carbs have recently been cleaned and set at the factory setting.(2 1/4 turns out i think) the compressing is 124lb. to 125lb. on all three cylinders). I've tried the regular plug that are about $10.00 and the $2.00 extended idle plugs and it runs the same with either type. I have recently removed the VRO cause it wasn't using the amount of oil I thought It should have, so just to be safe it had to go. It ran like this before and after the VRO was removed. I have a manual and of the few timing settings that i have checked, all have been set right. Anybody have any ideas. Thanks Trent

Re: rough running

It ran the same before they were cleaned. I bought this boat last year. It has always had this problem. I was pretty sure it wasn't the carbs cause the idle curcuit seemed to work fine and the high curcuit seemed to work fine. In the fall I cleaned the carbs to see if my thinking was wrong, but no fix. The boat sat about a year before I bought it. My thinking is that the timing isn't advancing as fast as the carbs are, but I'm not sure how to check that. I have a seloc manual(I know not the greatest) but checked what I could see without getting to envolved.
