Rough water shut down

I fished a redfish tournament today with nearly 300 boats entered. Needless to say at safe light when everyone took off the water in the river was quite rough from all the wakes. I was running near 3/4 throttle the engine was sounding good as usual, approximately 1 mile into the run after hitting some rough water the engine powered down and shut off as if it was out of gas. Has never done this before. After coming to a stop I turned the key it fired up and when i was putting it back on plane it kinds sputtered but then got on plane and off we were. After fishing for several hours i fired it up to move to another fishing spot the engine fired up and when idling thru shallow water the engine was not idling smoothly as it normally does. And again it sputtered a bit getting on plane but got on plane and ran fine. The rest of the day the engine acted the same with rough idling.

My question is what would cause the shutdown while running, obviously a fuel disruption but any ideas on the cause and the rough idling.

UPDATE. When flushing the motor after the getting home I had the cowling off just looking at the motor while it flushed and notice an indeterminate gas drip coming from somewhere on the bottom carb. I have not noticed this before but I do not usually have cowling off while flushing.

The motor is a 1997 Yamaha v4 Saltwater series 115hp .

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rough water shut down

sounds like maybe a bad float valve, needle sticking, etc. on that carb that's dripping....least that would be the first place I'd check.

I would also check tour gas tank for water or crud. Is the sound proofing comming off of the inside of your hood. Old sound proofing will cause all kinds of fuel problems. Could also be an elcctrical short or loose wire in your control box.

thanks for the response Ill check all this , I am thinking that the float valve sticking needle in the leaking carb is a good place start. I think ill order two rebuild kits and do them both.

Im saying this because you said that it was very rough water. Usually a float sticks anytime weather in smooth or rough water. I thinking that a jarring of the motor caused something to happen. I personally had a motor drop 2 cylinders after hitting a big wave I still dont know what the cause was but the outcome was not good. The next big wave and we were swimming. Good old Gulf Of Mexico

you need to find out exactly where the fuel is leaking and could be trash in needle and seat causing over filling,
and check filters to see if trash or water got stirred up in tank hitting rough water
